Fourth Trimester Care
Congratulations on the birth of your baby!
Weill Cornell Medicine is excited to support you throughout this next chapter. We are here to provide supportive, compassionate care to help you enjoy physical and emotional well-being.
The months after your baby is born is often called the “fourth trimester” or the “postpartum period.” During this time, you are recovering from the physical and emotional stress of pregnancy and childbirth. You are also caring for your newborn, which can be physically and emotionally draining, as well as isolating. At this time, your body and daily life are changing profoundly.
Prioritize Your Fourth Trimester Care
It is important to care for yourself during this time. The obstetricians and gynecologists (OBGYNs) at Weill Cornell Medicine are postpartum health experts — and are here to care for you when you need it.
The current standard is to visit your OBGYN six weeks after your baby’s birth. However, you are welcome to schedule an appointment sooner and more frequently than the standard. There is no need to wait to address uncomfortable symptoms, physical pain or mental challenges. Our team is always available to help improve your health.
Why Choose Weill Cornell Medicine for Fourth Trimester Care?
Supportive, personalized postpartum care: It is important to visit your OBGYN after you give birth. During these visits, your doctor will conduct a physical exam and ask you many questions about your health and emotional well-being. You will also discuss all the resources available to you during this time, including help with breastfeeding, diet and exercise recommendations, physical therapy, support groups and more.
Multidisciplinary care from leading experts: When you choose Weill Cornell Medicine, you have access to a network of doctors and specialists. Your OBGYN may consult with experts in physical therapy, integrative health and well-being, endocrinology, psychiatry, urogynecology and other medical professionals as needed.
Weill Cornell Medicine partners with NewYork-Presbyterian, one of the top hospital systems in New York City and the U.S.
Fourth Trimester Conditions We Care For
Our team provides compassionate care for all postpartum conditions. We work closely with you to diagnose and treat:
- Postpartum depression and anxiety, persistent feelings of sadness, isolation or overwhelm
- Slow healing after giving birth, including slow healing of the uterus, vagina or Cesarean-section incision
- Hormonal imbalances
- Low sex drive (libido) and pain during sex
- Chronic (long-lasting) fatigue
- Diastasis recti (separation of the large abdominal muscles)
- Pelvic floor disorders, including urinary and fecal incontinence
- Difficulty breastfeeding or chestfeeding, including clogged milk ducts
During the weeks and months after having a baby, many are so focused on caring for their newborn that they do not take care of themselves. Be sure to visit your OBGYN at least once during the fourth trimester to help feel as healthy, happy and energetic as possible.
