The Genetic Counseling Virtual Clinic helps patients learn more about their genetic health so they can make informed decisions about their care.
Specifically, the clinic sees patients who do not require a physical exam, including:
· Couples considering pregnancy that are concerned about having a genetic risk and want further testing.
· Referred pediatric and adult patients who have a suspected genetic condition and need genetic testing.
· Family members of a current patient who are interested in genetic testing.
Our virtual clinic allows you to connect with our expert genetic counselors from the comfort of your home or other convenient locations. During the visit, patients will have the opportunity to share their medical history and learn more about the testing options available.
Please note: Virtual visits are only available for New York, New Jersey and Connecticut residents at this time.
Our genetic counselors are among the most experienced in the area and are supported by a physician who specializes in genetics. Our expertise allows us to share the most up-to-date testing options available, so you can make the health decisions that best align with your priorities and values.
Patients may receive a referral from their doctor or reach out on their own if they know there is a family history of a genetic condition.
During the initial virtual visit, a member of our team will discuss your medical history and learn more about your family history before reviewing your genetic testing options.
If you decide to pursue testing, our team will reach out to your insurer for pre-authorization, if needed. Additionally, our genetic counselors will provide information about testing and collecting a sample.
Testing can often be done at home via a cheek swab/saliva kit mailed to your home (with shipping covered by the lab). Patients can also schedule an in-person appointment for a blood draw. The results are typically ready in about three to six weeks.
Once the results come in, our counselors will review the information via a phone call. If needed, our team will help you schedule a follow-up visit.
Our virtual clinic is open every Thursday from 1-5 p.m. To schedue an appointment call (646) 962-2205.
Genetic counseling is a specialized field of healthcare that involves providing information and support to individuals or families who have a chance to have, or are already affected by genetic conditions. Genetic counselors are trained healthcare professionals who have expertise in medical genetics and counseling techniques.
The primary purpose of genetic counseling is to help individuals and families understand the genetic factors that contribute to their health conditions. Genetic counseling may also help with understanding the chance that other family members may have a certain genetic condition and provide support and guidance as individuals and families navigate the complex world of genetic conditions.
A genetic counseling appointment offers personalized support and information regarding inherited conditions and genetic health. A genetic counselor and a geneticist will review your medical history, gather a family history, explain the role of genetics related to your health, discuss testing options, and help you interpret your genetic testing results.
The appointment is to help you make informed decisions regarding your health and deepen your understanding of your genetic risk. We may provide available resources/referrals for managing genetic conditions.
Genetic counseling helps individuals, and their families understand their genetic risks and make informed decisions about their health. By reviewing personal and family medical histories, genetic counselors can identify patterns or indications of inherited conditions, allowing for early detection and intervention. They also provide education and guidance on available genetic testing options, helping individuals understand the benefits, limitations, and implications of such tests. If a genetic variation (mutation) is identified through testing, this can better inform your current management and medication regimen.
Genetic counseling also offers emotional support, addresses psychological and social aspects, and assists in navigating the complex landscape of genetic health. Ultimately, genetic counseling empowers individuals to take control of and make proactive choices regarding their genetic health.
Most insurance plans will cover a consultation with a genetics provider. Some insurance plans may fully cover genetic counseling, while others may require co-payments, deductibles, or other out-of-pocket expenses. Coverage can also be influenced by the purpose of genetic counseling. Typically, insurance plans provide coverage for genetic counseling related to a specific medical condition or if it is deemed medically necessary.
