Interventional Cardiology Expertise and Minimally Invasive Treatment Options at Weill Cornell Medicine
Interventional cardiology is the specialty of diagnosing and treating heart and blood vessel conditions using non-surgical, minimally invasive techniques. During interventional cardiology procedures, a catheter (long, thin tube) is inserted into a very small puncture (cut) in the body and guided to the specific area in need of treatment.
These highly efficient techniques prevent the need for open-heart surgery. Interventional cardiology procedures require a small cut, which minimizes pain and speeds recovery.
Cardiac Catheterization
Cardiac catheterization is a minimally invasive procedure used to detect the presence of heart disease. A catheter is inserted into the groin or wrist and advanced to the heart. Dye is injected to identify any blockages in the heart. (This procedure is called an angiogram.) If a blockage is found, it can be opened through a procedure called angioplasty or stent (a small, mesh tube that holds open passageways in the body, including the heart) implantation.
