What is Gender Affirming Surgery?
Gender affirming surgery (also known as gender affirmation surgery) refers to surgical procedures that support a person’s gender identity so that a person’s body better aligns with their identified gender. It often means surgery for a transgender, nonbinary, or gender diverse adult to relieve gender dysphoria.
Our Program
The Weill Cornell Medicine Department of Urology’s Adult Gender Affirming Genital Surgery Program is dedicated to providing safe, affirming, and inclusive care to adults (18+ years old) seeking gender affirming surgery, specifically genital surgeries, which includes vaginoplasty, orchiectomy, and hysterectomy.
Gender Affirming Language
Our program prioritizes using inclusive and affirming language such as ‘gender affirming surgery’ to describe our adult surgical services. By using language that affirms gender identity rather than anatomic changes, our goal is to foster a supportive environment where every patient feels validated and empowered.
