Why Choose the Small Bowel and Celiac Disease Program at Weill Cornell Medicine?

The Small Bowel and Celiac Disease Program is committed to improving outcomes for patients with complex small intestinal disorders through precise diagnosis, expert management, and long-term support. Our mission is to integrate state-of-the-art diagnostics, including video capsule endoscopy, specialized imaging, and advanced laboratory testing, with compassionate, individualized care. We focus on how small bowel health influences nutrition, immunity, and overall wellness to tailor treatment strategies that address the root causes of disease. By combining the expertise of gastroenterologists, dietitians, surgeons, and other collaborating experts, we deliver coordinated, evidence-based care that helps patients heal, maintain wellness, and regain confidence in their health, while advancing research that drives progress in small bowel and celiac disease management.

The Small Bowel: A Gateway to Digestive and Overall Health

The small bowel is one of the most important organs in the human body, measuring over 16 feet in length—about the heigh of a full-grown giraffe! One of the small bowel’s main functions is to help digest and absorb nutrients extracted from food, though it also has an important role in immunity and generalized health via the gut microbiome. This collection of millions of unique bacteria, fungi, and single-celled organisms interacts with the body daily and affects health across multiple organ systems.

Small intestinal health and the gut microbiome can be compromised by a wide variety of conditions, including Inflammatory Bowel DiseaseInflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), cancer, infection, surgery, and motility disorders, which may lead to other health complications. Additionally, Celiac Disease affects up to 1% of the population, though often goes undiagnosed for many years due to vague presenting complaints.

Regardless of why you are seeking out care, our multi-disciplinary team can help optimize your small bowel health and gut microbiome through targeted evaluation and treatment.

Celiac Disease Expertise When You NeedI Most

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition in which ingestion of gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, triggers inflammation and damage to the small intestine. Beyond digestive symptoms, celiac disease can affect nearly every organ system, influencing nutrition, bone health, and overall well-being. Symptoms can be subtleand may not even initially affect the digestive tract, manifesting as fatigue, anemia, bone loss, migraines, joint pains, or infertility, making the condition challenging to recognize without proper testing.

Testing for celiac disease is always recommended for individuals with chronic gastrointestinal symptoms, unexplained iron deficiency or anemia, abnormal liver tests, or autoimmune conditions such as type 1 diabetes or thyroid disease. Family members of patients with celiac disease are also at increased risk and should consider screening. Others who present with symptoms may also benefit from testing, which includes blood work and endoscopy.

Our program provides comprehensive evaluation and ongoing management for individuals with known or suspected celiac disease, using the latest diagnostic tools, including advanced serologic testing, endoscopic assessment, bone density testing (DEXA scan) and small bowel imaging. Care is tailored to each patient’s needs and supported by expert nutrition counseling and long-term follow-up to promote healing, restore health, and prevent complications. We are also committed to advancing research and education to improve understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of celiac disease across the lifespan. We collaborate closely with our pediatric gastroenterology specialists to ensure a seamless transition of care from childhood through adulthood, supporting patients and families every step of the way.
