Personal Statement

Dr. Amir Soumekh received his undergraduate degree with honors from Columbia University.  He received his medical degree and subsequently completed internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Soumekh then completed fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the New York Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical College.

Dr. Soumekh is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University, within the Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health.

In addition to general gastroenterology and liver disease, Dr. Soumekh has clinical expertise in gastrointestinal motility, defecatory disorders and gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD). He performs several procedures in this subspecialty: reflux testing (including wireless capsule reflux testing), high-resolution esophageal manometry, and high-resolution anorectal manometry. Dr. Soumekh also has expertise and subspecialty training in benign, premalignant and malignant esophageal disorders, including Eosinophilic Esophagitis, Barrett’s Esophagus and Esophageal Cancer and performs advanced techniques including confocal endomicroscopy, radiofrequency ablation, cryotherapy and endoscopic mucosal resection for the identification and treatment of these disorders.

As part of the Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health, Dr. Soumekh also specializes in gastrointestinal cancers, including colon cancer, small bowel cancers and inherited (genetic) cancer syndromes. He performs surveillance of gastrointestinal cancers in average- and high-risk patients, endoscopic mucosal resection of advanced colonic polyps as well as video capsule endoscopy.
