Advanced Practice Providers for Gynecologic Care

What Are Gynecologic Advanced Practice Providers (APPs)?

APPs are medical professionals with master’s or doctoral degrees, who have extensive training to detect, treat and manage common medical conditions. At Weill Cornell Medicine, two types of advanced practice providers are on our gynecology care team.

• Nurse Practitioners (NPs) - these women’s health specialists begin their careers as Registered Nurses (RNs). They earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and pursue advanced training leading to a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree. Both pathways culminate in board certification by passing a national exam.
• Physician Assistants (PAs) - after earning a bachelor’s degree, these clinicians complete a physician assistant program. They must have more than 3,000 hours of direct patient care experience and over 2,000 hours of clinical rotations.

With this training, our APPs provide a wide range of care. In addition to general gynecology, they collaborate with specialized OBGYN physicians to offer care in:

• Gynecologic oncology
• Gynecologic surgery
• Maternal-fetal medicine
• Urogynecology

Services Offered by Advanced Gynecology Providers

• Annual wellness exams
• Diagnosis and treatment of common health issues, such as Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) and vulvar pain
• Postoperative wound care
• Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) testing
