What Are Gynecologic Advanced Practice Providers (APPs)?

APPs are medical professionals who have extensive training to detect, treat and manage common medical conditions. At Weill Cornell Medicine, two types of advanced practice providers are on our gynecology care team.

  • Nurse Practitioners (NPs) - these women’s health specialists begin their careers as Registered Nurses (RNs). They earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), pursue advanced training for a master’s or doctoral degree in nursing, and achieve NP board certification by passing a national exam.
  • Physician Assistants (PAs) - after earning a bachelor’s degree, these clinicians complete a physician assistant program. They must have more than 3,000 hours of direct patient care experience and over 2,000 hours of clinical rotations.

With this training, our APPs provide all sorts of gynecology care. A few areas in which they serve include:

  • Gynecologic oncology
  • Gynecologic surgery
  • Well-woman care
  • Urogynecology

Some also meet obstetric needs. As Ob/Gyn providers, they specialize in areas such as maternal-fetal medicine, infertility, and labor and delivery.
