About Sylvonne A. Layne, M.D., MPH
I was drawn to surgery for its combination of technical skill, critical thinking, and the opportunity to make a tangible difference in patients’ lives. Throughout my training in general surgery, trauma, and critical care, I developed a particular interest in burn surgery, where these elements come together in a uniquely meaningful way.
Burn care extends far beyond the operating room. It requires managing the immediate consequences of injury while planning for wound healing, reconstruction, functional recovery, and long-term quality of life. I value the opportunity to care for patients throughout this continuum and to help them navigate the physical and personal challenges of recovery.
My clinical interests include acute burn care, complex wound management, reconstruction, and surgical critical care, as well as the evaluation and management of patients with traumatic injuries and other acute surgical conditions. I am committed to providing thoughtful, comprehensive care and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to achieve the best possible outcomes for my patients.
Dr. Sylvonne Layne is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the division of Trauma, Burns, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and Assistant Attending Surgeon at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
She completed her undergraduate education and Master of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh before earning her medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine. She subsequently completed her general surgery residency at Howard University Hospital, followed by fellowship training in burn surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine and surgical critical care at Lehigh Valley Health Network.
Dr. Layne is particularly interested in comprehensive burn care, including acute resuscitation, operative wound management, skin grafting, reconstruction, laser treatment and recovery following burn injury. Her practice also encompasses the care of patients with traumatic injuries and other acute surgical conditions.
She values a multidisciplinary approach to patient care and is committed to supporting patients throughout their treatment and recovery while contributing to the education and development of future surgeons.
