About Sandhya K. Balaram, M.D., Ph.D.
After 20 years of patient care in New York City, I am delighted and honored to join the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine. As chief of the program at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, I am grateful for the opportunity to offer comprehensive cardiovascular services and provide excellence in outcomes and patient experience within the borough of Brooklyn. I look forward to fostering growth and building strong community relationships as a part of the WCM team.
I use my experience and expertise to provide individualized, patient-centered care with compassion. Heart surgery can be a challenging time for patients and their families. Our experienced team is dedicated in helping patients to navigate their journey through diagnosis, treatment, and recovery, with the goal of returning to an improved quality of life.
After graduating from an accelerated combined BA/MD program at the University of Missouri in 1993, Dr. Balaram completed her general surgery training at Creighton University. There she received a PhD in 1999 for her research in the biology of atherosclerosis. Her cardiothoracic residency at the University of Wisconsin in Madison was completed in 2003 and she moved to New York for additional training in minimally invasive cardiothoracic surgery. She previously served as both Division Chief and Director of Quality for Cardiovascular Surgery at Mount Sinai Morningside, where she was as Associate Professor of Surgery at Icahn School of Medicine. Dr. Balaram is a member of the American Association of Thoracic Surgery and Society of Thoracic Surgery.
