Personal Statement

I am a Radiation Oncologist originally from the Canary Islands (Gran Canaria, Spain) who has devoted her career over the last three decades to the care of patients primarily with gynecological gastrointestinal cancers, in the academic setting. At Indiana University, I became a Professor of Radiation Oncology with an adjunct position as Professor of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology.

I have been involved in clinical cancer research for many years and served in several committees in cooperative groups, particularly GOG/NRG, RTOG and ECOG.

As part of the GOG, I contributed to the development of the Guidelines for Image Guided Brachytherapy for Cervical Cancer working together with experts Radiation Oncologists from around the country in the field of Gynecological Brachytherapy. I was actively involved in the ACR guidelines for the management of Cervical, Uterine, Vulvar and Cervical Cancer.

During my time at Indiana University, I was able to develop several Investigators initiated trials on Rectal cancer, Pancreatic Cancer, and Hepatocellular Carcinoma in collaboration with my colleagues from the GI-Oncology as well as the Liver Oncology Programs. Our work on the use of Stereotactic Body (Ablative) Radiotherapy contributed to the recognition of this treatment modality in the management of Hepatocellular carcinoma by the NCCN guidelines.

I have had the great opportunity of working with ASCO and ASCO at the National and International levels. From being the Chair of the first ASTRO Guidelines for the management of Primary Liver Cancers, to training and education in numerous countries in Central, South America and East Africa. These experiences have enriched me greatly, not only as an oncologist but as a person who has been able to get closer to the hard reality of the limitations of Cancer Care in many parts of the world.

My passion is taking care of patients in the clinic every day, working together with other specialists from Surgical/Gynecological and Medical Oncology, to provide excellence of care for every Patient and facilitating access to participation in Clinical Trials.
