About Julie V. Schaffer, M.D.
As a pediatric dermatologist, I provide comprehensive, patient- and family-centered care for the full spectrum of skin disease in infants, children, and adolescents. My individualized, evidence-based approach considers the whole child, including the social and emotional impact of dermatologic conditions, and incorporates insights I have gained through my experiences as a textbook writer, journal editor, and mother of five children. I strive not only to develop an optimized approach to diagnosis and treatment, but also to empower patients and families by listening to their stories, answering their questions, and addressing their concerns.
I am excited to join the dermatology team at Weill Cornell Medicine in its mission to improve outcomes for all patients and elevate the standard of dermatologic care through clinical advances, exceptional teaching, and innovative research.
Dr. Julie V. Schaffer obtained summa cum laude undergraduate and cum laude medical degrees from Yale University. She remained at Yale for her Pediatric Internship and Dermatology Residency, serving as Dermatology Chief Resident, and then completed a Pediatric Dermatology Fellowship at New York University (NYU) School of Medicine. Dr. Schaffer was subsequently the Director ofPediatric Dermatology and Director of Dermatology Resident Education at NYUfrom 2005-2015. Prior to joining Weill Cornell Medicine in 2026, she held the role of Professor in the Pediatric Dermatology Division at Hackensack University Medical Center, where she founded and directed a Pediatric Dermatology Fellowship. Dr. Schaffer’s practice is dedicated to pediatric dermatology, with special interests in genetic skin disease, birthmarks, nevi, and complex or difficult-to-manage inflammatory skin conditions.
Since 2021, Dr. Schaffer has led exam development at the American Board of Dermatology (ABD) as Associate Executive Director. She previously served on the ABD Board of Directors from 2012-2020 and was ABD President in 2020. As a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Committee on Certification (COCERT), she also oversees standards in other medical disciplines.
Dr. Schaffer is a lead editor of the widely used textbook Dermatology and authorof Dermatology Essentials as well as more than 150 articles and chapters in the medical literature. She is Associate Editor for the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and was previously on the JAMA Dermatology Editorial Board. Dr. Schaffer has chaired many committees and courses for the American Academy of Dermatology, Society for Pediatric Dermatology, Dermatology Foundation, International League of Dermatological Societies, and other organizations. She is a Castle Connolly Top Doctor (2018-present), and honors for her clinical research and teaching include a Dermatology Foundation Career Development Award, AAD Young Investigator in Dermatology Award, and American Dermatological Association Young Leadership Award.
