Personal Statement

As a neonatologist, I am privileged to support newborns and their families during some of their most vulnerable—but often most resilient—moments. In those times, I believe the best care happens when families are included as essential members of the medical team. With a background in biomedical engineering, I bring a problem-solving perspective to my clinical practice, along with a deep appreciation for interdisciplinary collaboration. I’m particularly interested in how engineering and medicine can intersect to improve outcomes—whether through the development of novel medical devices, adapting technology to low-resource settings, or working in multidisciplinary teams to bring innovation to the bedside.

Biographical Info

Dr. John Mascari is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine. He earned his undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from Dartmouth College and his M.D. from Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine. He then completed a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at Northwestern University and is board certified in Pediatrics.

Dr. Mascari’s translational research spans medical technology development and global health. His primary research interest is improving patient care through the design and testing of devices for newborns that are sustainable in real-world settings. He has tackled these challenges in both Tanzania and the United Kingdom, addressing health system issues unique to each setting. In addition to his clinical and research work, Dr. Mascari is dedicated to teaching, mentorship, and advancing innovation that centers the unique needs of neonatal patients, their families, and the clinicians who care for them.
