About Amarelle Hamo, Ph.D.
Amarelle Hamo, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Psychology in Clinical Psychiatry and Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine and an Assistant Attending Psychologist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Hamo is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in infant and early childhood development and mental health and parental wellbeing. She is a member of the Division of Neonatology (Newborn Medicine) at Weill Cornell.
Dr. Hamo brings a warm, collaborative approach to her work, partnering with families to understand their experiences through the lens of culture, history, trauma, and broader social influences. At Weill Cornell, she provides psychological consultation and psychotherapy to parents of infants hospitalized in the NICU and conducts developmental evaluations on young children followed through the NICU Graduate Clinic. In addition to patient care, Dr. Hamo is involved in the education and supervision of psychology interns and postdoctoral fellows, as well as psychiatry residents and fellows.
Her clinical and research interests are focused on parental wellbeing in high stress contexts, early childhood mental health, and evidence-based assessments and interventions for infants, young children, and their families.
Dr. Amarelle Hamo earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology and Women’s Gender, Sexuality and Studies from Barnard College, Columbia University where she graduated Cum Laude. She went on to receive her master’s and PhD in School Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University. She completed her predoctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the Yale Child Study Center, with a specialization in early childhood.
During her training, Dr. Hamo gained extensive experience in psychological and developmental evaluations and in evidence-based treatments including Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Child Parent Psychotherapy (CPP), She also received advanced training in comprehensive developmental evaluations, including gold-standard autism assessments across both outpatient and NICU Graduate clinic settings.
Prior to joining Weill Cornell, Dr. Hamo was an Assistant Professor in Clinical Medical Psychology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and a Clinical Psychologist in the School Based Mental Health Program at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University. In this role, she provided psychotherapy to elementary-aged children and their families and contributed to the development and implementation of a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum across multiple elementary schools in the Washington Heights community. She has developed particular expertise in helping families navigate school-based services, including Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs) and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
