About Maria Karas, M.D.
The Perkin Heart Failure Center specializes in advanced systolic and diastolic heart failure, left ventricular assist device implantation, evaluation for cardiac transplantation, valvular disease and evaluation and treatment of pulmonary hypertension. We are committed to providing individualized patient care with a multi-disciplinary approach. As an academic cardiologist, researcher and educator my goal is to deliver the best possible care to our patients and to provide them with access to the most innovative therapeutics.
Maria Karas, MD was raised in Wilmington, DE and received her undergraduate education at the University of Pennsylvania. She received her medical degree from Weill Medical College of Cornell University in 2006. Thereafter, she stayed in New York and completed training in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Medical Center. During her residency and fellowship, Dr. Karas performed clinical research in the areas of stroke, echocardiography, and heart failure. Dr. Karas was awarded the American College of Cardiology Foundation/Merck Research Fellowship in 2012. In 2013 she joined Weill Cornell Medicine as a full-time faculty member of the Perkin Heart Failure Center with clinical interest in heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, mechanical circulatory support, and cardiogenic shock. Dr. Karas has published several abstracts and papers in peer-reviewed journals and has presented at national meetings. A significant focus of her clinical practice is in the care of critically ill care patients and she serves as the Medical Director of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and leads the NYP/Weill Cornell Cardiogenic Shock Team. In 2024 Dr. Karas took on the role of Director of Cardiovascular Operations and in 2025 was asked to be the Interim Director of the Perkin Heart Failure Center.
