Personal Statement

Joseph F. Murray, MD, is an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and the consulting psychiatrist at NYP/Lower Manhattan.  He has returned to clinical work after serving as the Associate Dean of Student Affairs at Weill Cornell Medical College. 

Biographical Info

  

Dr. Murray is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Scranton, where he majored in Biology, English, and Philosophy. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1995. He completed an internship at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and a residency in Psychiatry at the Payne Whitney Clinic of the New York Presbyterian Hospital (NYPH).
 

Dr. Murray worked at the Center for Special Studies (CSS), the multi-disciplinary HIV clinic at NYPH, from 1999-2010. In 2010, he was named course director of the Medicine Patients Society 1 course at Weill Cornell Medical College. He also served as the associate director of the Psychiatry clerkship. He is an attending on the NYPH Psychiatry Consultation-Liaison Service and the was the consulting psychiatrist to the NYPH Heart Failure/Heart Transplant service.  He is a principal participant in the ITEACH project (Interprofessional Training and Education at Cornell-Hunter).  He is involved in two student-run organizations: the Weill Cornell Community Clinic (WCCC) and the Weill Cornell Center for Human Rights (WCCHR). He is also the academic coordinator for the medical college's Music and Medicine initiative.
