Personal Statement
I am an Otolaryngologist – Head and Neck Surgeon; the focus of my clinical practice is the medical and surgical management of complex sinus and skull base disorders in adults and children. I emphasize a holistic approach to patient care, incorporating modern scientific advances and the most up-to-date medical and surgical research with consideration of the individual needs and issues of my patients. My goal is to deliver cutting-edge therapies and treatments. I embrace the central tenets of transparency, compassionate care, patient education, active dialogue, and shared decision making. By taking the time to listen to my patients and carefully explaining the medical and surgical options available, I am able to give personalized, patient-centered, and effective care. I am honored to work with you to navigate your medical and surgical care and I look forward to our visit. We encourage you to bring all prior imagining (CT, MRI) related to your problem on a CD-ROM to the initial consultation visit. Biography
Samuel N. Helman is Assistant Professor of Clinical Otolaryngology at Weill Cornell Medical College. He is an Otolaryngologist – Head and Neck Surgeon with fellowship training in advanced Endoscopic Sinus and Skull Base Surgery (Rhinology). Dr. Helman is an expert in surgical approaches to treat complex diseases of the skull base, including infections of the sinus and skull base, inflammatory diseases, and tumors. Dr. Helman’s treatment philosophy focuses on patient advocacy, shared decision making, and incorporating individualized attention to planning patient care.
Dr. Helman grew up in Silverton, Oregon. He received his bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience from McGill University where he was inducted to the Dean’s List. He completed his research thesis at the renowned Montreal Neurological Institute. He attended medical school at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City as a Dean Dominick Purpura Scholar where he graduated with distinction in Otorhinolaryngology. Dr. Helman then completed his residency in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the prestigious Mount Sinai Hospital – New York Eye and Ear Infirmary Program, where, as Chief Resident he was awarded the J. Swift Hanley Research Award for excellence in research. Dr. Helman finished his training at Emory University School of Medicine, completing a rigorous Rhinology (Sinus) and Skull Base Surgery fellowship.
Dr. Helman has been recognized with numerous awards recognizing his clinical and research accomplishments. He has authored over thirty scientific publications, several book chapters, and has active patents in the area of 3-D printed personal protective equipment (PPE). Dr. Helman has presented at several national and international meetings, including podium presentations at the American Rhinologic Society Annual Meeting, the International Conference on Head and Neck Cancer, and the Metro Atlanta Research Symposium. He is a journal reviewer for journals in the field of Rhinology and works as an Associate Editor. Dr. Helman is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, the American Rhinologic Society, and the North American Skull Base Society. He derives enormous satisfaction from global health, and most recently returned from a cleft lip and cleft palate surgical mission to Santa Marta, Colombia.
Dr. Helman’s clinical focus is in the use of minimally invasive endoscopic techniques to manage sinus and skull base disease and the use of open surgical approaches to the nose, sinus, and skull base where necessary. He specializes in the medical and surgical management of nasal and sinus disorders, stereotactic surgery, and skull base surgery. In addition, he treats general otolaryngology disorders including ear infections, ear drum perforations, hearing loss, thyroid and parathyroid problems (including cysts, tumors, and endocrine dysfunction), acid reflux, salivary gland disorders (stones, infections, tumors), neck masses, and cancers of the head and neck.
