Personal Statement

I enjoy the study of cells. It's truly fascinating as to how a tiny amount of aspirate or exfoliative material with very few cells can reveal so much information regarding a disease process. That's what drew me to cytopathology. As a cytopathologist, I study aspirates and exfoliative material procured from minimally invasive techniques and evaluate the underlying disease process. I work with a team of cytopathologists, cytotechnologists and other support staff to render the best diagnostic interpretation. As the field of molecular cytology evolves we are seeing integration of molecular tests and markers with cytopathologic analyses to provide both diagnostic and prognostic information on tumors and our role is rapidly expanding. We play a key role in patient management decisions and outcome through interactions with our medical and surgical colleagues at various tumor board panel discussions. Delivering the highest quality of health care is our top priority and we strive every minute to maintain that target.

Dr. Rao completed her medical training at JJM Medical College in India. She went on to do a residency in Ophthalmology at Aravind Eye Hospital and Post Graduate Research Institute in India, one of the leading eye institutions in the world. After her move to the United States she joined as a research fellow in the lab of Dr. Nora Laver, an ocular pathologist and her mentor who introduced her to the world of pathology. She completed her residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School Program and went on to be their Priscilla D. Taft Fellow in Cytopathology. She followed with a fellowship in Surgical Pathology at the UCSF Medical Center.

She is the Assistant Attending in Cytopathology at the NY Presbyterian Hospital. She also holds an appointment as the Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical College.
