Personal Statement

As a neurologist with subspecialty in epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology, I work with patients who have seizures every day. I strive to personalize treatment, with goal of providing seizure control, and therefore balance, and quality that people with epilepsy desire in life. I find epilepsy (the disease of having recurrent seizures), a personal disease. Seizures can have personal and unique physical and emotional manifestations in different people with epilepsy, and anti-seizure medications will have personal and unique affects and side effects. Treatment with epilepsy surgery and neuro-stimulation devices may benefit some people and not others. My goal in treating people with epilepsy is to figure out their unique disease state, their particular response to treatment, and find a unique solution.

Biography

Dr. Afra is an Interim Assistant Professor of Neurology in Weill Cornell Medical College, an Attending Physician in Neurology in New York Presbyterian Hospital. She received her medical degree (Summa Cum Laude) from Albert Szent Gyorgyi Medical University (University of Szeged) in Hungary. She then completed one year of internship in internal medicine in Southern Illinois University, three years of neurology residency in University of Wisconsin, and two years of fellowship in epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology in Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Prior to joining Department of Neurology in Weil Cornell Medicine, Dr. Afra spent a decade in Department of Neurology of University of Utah treating people with intractable epilepsy (including presurgical and surgical evaluations), conducting pharma and neurostimulation device trials in epilepsy and initiating and directing EEG and Epilepsy Fellowship Programs.

From clinical standpoint Dr. Afra focuses her practice on diagnosis and treatment of adults and adolescents with seizures and epilepsy. Her interests include treatment of intractable epilepsies including evaluation for seizure surgery and neurostimulation devices for epilepsy, seizures that have been difficult to diagnose or have not responded to medications. During her research time Dr. Afra conducts clinical trials in epilepsy, which include novel upcoming neurostimulation devices and pharmacologic agents. She is also interested in digital therapeutics that may improve quality of life and decrease seizure burden in people with epilepsy, in the dynamics of intracranial recorded seizures, and the basis of variations of human cognitive function including synesthesia.
