Personal Statement

Gastrointestinal and Liver pathology is one of the broader subspecialties of anatomic pathology. Pathologists review specimens from the esophagus to the anus with the pancreas, gallbladder and liver mixed in. We deal with both neoplastic (cancerous) and non-neoplastic disease (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease and celiac disease, among many others). The field is a fascinating and ever changing one and I’m glad to be a part of it here at Cornell as we strive to deliver the best in both diagnostics and research. Apart from my clinical activity, my research interests include inflammatory bowel disease associated neoplasia and molecular and morphological correlations of gastrointestinal carcinomas. Besides gastrointestinal and liver pathology, I am also interested in global health, particularly in novel and sustainable models of delivery of anatomic and clinical pathology related services to patients in resource restricted settings.

Biography

Melanie Johncilla is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine. She attended Yale University School of Medicine for her medical training. Her thesis was on the clinicopathologic features of Wilson’s disease patients with a specific emphasis on histologic findings in the liver in those patients. She then went on to Brigham and Women’s Hospital for a combined Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) residency where she served as chief resident in anatomic pathology. During residency she was awarded the Felix Brown Pathologist in Training Award for outstanding residents, became involved in global health outreach within the department and published a large series on the biopsy findings in livers in patients treated with ipilimumab, an immune checkpoint inhibitor used in the treatment of metastatic melanoma. Dr. Johncilla stayed on at Brigham and Women’s hospital where she did a general surgical pathology fellowship with a special focus on soft tissue, head and neck, genitourinary and molecular pathology. Finally, she completed a gastrointestinal and liver pathology fellowship there from 2016 – 2017. Her research interests involve identifying morphologic correlates to molecular findings in certain carcinomas (IBD associated carcinomas, goblet cell carcinoid tumors).
