I developed a strong passion for minimally invasive spine surgery early in my career after seeing the tremendous benefits it brings to my patients. These include shorter hospital stays, less blood loss, fewer infections, quicker recovery, faster return back to work and to activities of daily living. I am constantly striving to improve our knowledge and techniques in minimally invasive approaches to the spine and, therefore, the benefits and outcomes of my patients as well.
I am dedicated to providing exceptional care to my patients through an individualized, multidisciplinary approach. If surgery is a suitable option, I offer the most advanced surgical techniques and technologies. As a Brooklyn native, I am committed to giving back to my community and serving Brooklyn and beyond.
Dr. Chang is a board-certified neurosurgeon specializing in conditions and disorders of the spine. He has advanced training in minimally invasive spine surgery and leading-edge spinal navigation technology to help his patientsr ecover faster, often with less pain when compared to traditional approaches. His offices are located in Brooklyn, New York, and he performs surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital.
Dr. Chang graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in chemistry. He received his M.D. from the State University of New York Downstate College of Medicine, then completed his residency in neurosurgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. He completed a clinical fellowship inMinimally Invasive Spine and Navigation under Dr. Roger Härtl at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Prior to joining Weill Cornell Medicine, Dr. Chang was Chief of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery at Medstar Franklin Square Medical Center in Baltimore and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center and Clinical Assistant Professor in Neurosurgery at Georgetown University Medical Center.
Dr. Chang’s prior research interests include identifying potential biomaterials as substrates for intervertebral disc regeneration. He has interests in clinical outcomes research related to minimally invasiveapproaches to the spine.
Sponsored by the Foundation for International Education in NeurologicalSurgery (FIENS), Dr. Chang spent time in 2009 as a volunteer neurosurgeon at Danang General Hospital in Vietnam. He presented his work, “Decompressive Craniectomy in Civilian Gunshot Wounds to the Head: a Population Study” at the 10th Annual Meeting of the Congress of Neurosurgical Society of Vietnam in Binh Duong that year.
From Google Reviews:
Dr. Chang is an extremely amazing Doctor. Had problem for years other Doctors I saw did nerve test and could not find any problem. I was referred to Dr. Chang and he had the necessary tests done via MRI, X-Ray and CT scans and found the problem that other Doctors could not find.
I had back pain issues for years. Did physical Therapy. Worked out. As I got older, the pain just got worse. Wear and Tear on the LOWER back. Diagnoses was Spondylolisthesis, lumbar region; Spondylolisthesis at L4-L5 Level. Had surgery three weeks ago and I feel great. NO PAIN! I'm walking straighter and feel taller. Thank you so very much Dr. Chang. I will definitely recommend you to my friends, family or anyone I come across having back issues.
I have been dealing with back pain for over 25 years. I couldn't find a doctor that would do anything to help me besides physical therapy. Dr Chang suggested PT but when I told him it doesn't help he suggested surgery. I was skeptical of spinal fusion but went for it anyway because I was tired of the pain. It's now been two months since my surgery and I have been pain free!! Since I came home from the surgery I have not even had surgery pain. Dr Chang gave me my life back. I m so thankful to him.
Dr Chang had done two fusions on my spine and I am so glad I found him he has the best bed side manners of any dr I have ever seen
