Personal Statement

As a pathologist, I focus on the diagnosis of leukemias, lymphomas and other hematologic disorders. We work closely with hematologists, oncologists and other members of the clinical team to help make sure patients receive the most accurate diagnosis to best guide subsequent care. Given the nature of what we do, there is a tremendous opportunity to identify new disease patterns and improve our understanding of disease. In addition to my clinical and research interests, I am passionate about pathology education and outreach, particularly through social media.

Biography

Dr. Crane has a passion for diagnostic hematopathology and strives to provide the best possible patient care while constantly seeking new insight into disease mechanisms. By combining direct observation with her extensive research background, she is investigating how host and environmental factors may influence cancer initiation and progression. In particular, she is interested in how the immune system and factors associated with viral infection influence the development of lymphoma. Patients with immune suppression due to a variety of congenital or acquired causes (e.g. solid organ transplant, treatment for autoimmune disease, aging, and immune deficiency syndromes) are at increased risk for and demonstrate a unique spectrum of lymphoproliferative disease. She now joins a world renowned pathology group at Weill Cornell to investigate mechanisms underlying these disorders.

Dr. Crane graduated summa cum laude from Rice University with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, earned a M.Phil. from University College London while a Marshall Scholar and M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan as part of the Medical Scientist Training Program. She completed Anatomic Pathology and Hematopathology training at Johns Hopkins Hospital with additional postdoctoral research training under Dr. Tyler Jacks at MIT in cancer biology and Dr. Sean Morrison at UT Southwestern in stem cell biology and metabolism.

She is the author/co-author of more than 30 journal articles including papers in Science, Nature, Neuron and PNAS with her research also resulting in 2 patents. She is passionate about promoting education in science and medicine and serves as a Section Editor for Hematopathology at the Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and PathologyOutlines.com, as a reviewer for multiple pathology journals and as an Ambassador for the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology.
