Biography

A.Gabriella Wernicke, M.D., M.Sc. is a board certified radiation oncologist who specializes in treating primary and metastatic cancer of the Central Nervous System, Gastrointestinal Tract, and women's health issues in the areas of Breast Cancer and Gynecological Malignancies.  She is committed to introducing the most cutting-edge technology, including intensity-modulated radiation therapy, image-guided radiation therapy, stereotactic radiotherapy, hypofractionated radiotherapy, brachytherapy, stereotactic body radiotherapy, and intraoperative radiation techniques, with the intent of reducing toxicity to normal tissues and improving treatment outcomes. Her academic and clinical interests have led her to be involved in a number of research protocols and clinical trials as a principal investigator or co-investigator.  After a prestigious NIH K-30 award, Dr. Wernicke earned the additional degree of Master of Science in Clinical Research and Investigation at Weill Cornell Medical College. A prolific author of a number of publications, book chapters and abstracts, Dr. Wernicke has contributed new insights into the approach, delivery and outcomes of radiotherapy.  She serves as Assistant Director of the Residency Program, Director of Research for the Residency Program, Vice Chair of the Radiation Safety Committee, as well as a member of the WCMC Patient Safety Committee.

Dr. Wernicke completed her Radiation Oncology residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.  Throughout her training, she was committed to research and presented her work at a number of national and international meetings such as the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), American Radium Society, and the Radiological Society of North America. Her research activities were acknowledged with the American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO) Travel Grant Award in 2004, the Howard Wong ACRO Award for Brachytherapy in Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 2004, the American Association for Women Radiologists Research Seed Grant Award in 2004, and the 45th ASTRO Resident Clinical/Basic Research Award in 2003. Her research focus ranged from the basic science of brain tumor cells subjected to a hypoxic environment to the clinical aspects of preserving normal tissues from the effects of radiotherapy in breast cancer. Of note, she was one of the first radiation oncologists in the world to focus on sparing erectile function in men treated with external beam radiation therapy for prostate cancer.

Dr. Wernicke is a regular presenter at scientific meetings, a member of several national and international oncology societies, and a reviewer for peer-reviewed oncology journals. In addition to the publications, she has written book chapters on the management of brain and gynecologic malignancies and has recorded a training video on the role of radiotherapy in breastcancer. She is a tireless advocate of women's health rights, including the preservation of fertility.

On a personal note, Dr. Wernicke prides herself on being a warm and compassionate doctor, and cares about her patients above all.
