Donald Nathanson has had a long standing interest in treating children, adolescents, and their families with evidence-based therapies. He earned his B.A. in Psychology and Social and Political Thought at Georgetown University. He then obtained his Masters of Social Work at Columbia University, where he concentrated in Advanced Clinical Social Work Practice. While there, he was a part of the Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Training program, and completed intensive trainings by Marsha Linehan’s Behavioral Technology Group. He completed his internship at the Metropolitan Detention Center, Brooklyn, providing DBT to federal inmates. He has also gained expertise in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Parent Management Training. At Weill Cornell Medicine, he has been a co-investigator on two clinical research trials examining the feasibility and efficacy of providing DBT for pre-adolescent children. Currently, Donald is one of few therapists who is certified as able to provide with adherence Dialectical Behavior Therapy for pre-adolescent children (DBT-C) with severe emotional and behavioral disturbances.
He has presented his clinical and research work at national and international conferences including the American Psychological Association Convention, International Association of Forensic Mental Health Services, and the International Society for the Improvement and Teaching of Dialectical Behavior Therapy.
