Alfons Pomp, M.D.
Alfons Pomp, MD, FACS, FRCSC is Chief of GI Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Leon C. Hirsch Professor of Surgery. He is an Attending Surgeon at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
Dr. Pomp is a board-certified,internationally-recognized expert in advanced laparoscopic surgical techniques. His primary clinical interests include minimallyinvasive bariatric,foregut and solid organ surgery. Dr. Pomp has been selected consistently as one of "America's Top Doctors," by both Castle Connolly and US News & World Report, and named as a New York SuperDoctor, an honor accorded to just 5% of NY physicians. He was named as "Best Doctor" by New York Magazine in 2014.

Dr. Pomp received his BS with honors from McGill University and then attended the University of Sherbrooke Medical School. Following his surgical training at the University of Montreal he completed a two-year fellowship in Surgical Nutrition and Metabolism at the Brown University School of Medicine in Rhode Island. In 1988 he joined the faculty of the University of Montreal and was also appointed as an adjunct professor of surgery at McGill University. During the early 1990's he established a national reputation in advanced laparoscopic techniques and was a co-author on important contributions to the surgical literature on hernia repair, splenectomies, adrenalectomies and surgical robotics. In 1999, he was recruited to The Mount Sinai School of Medicine in new York where he helped establish one of the world's first programs for minimally invasive weight-loss surgery.
In 2003 he moved to the Weill Cornell Medical College and in 2005 he was appointed as a Frank Glenn Faculty Scholar in Surgery.
He is the site co-investigator in a recently awarded multi-million dollar NIH/NIDDK research grant as one of only 6 clinical centers in the United States that are part of the Bariatric Surgery Clinical Research Consortium.
Dr. Pomp has published more than 100 peer-reviewed studies and book chapters. He has been included in Castle Connolly's lists of New York's Top Doctors every year since 2002, and has been cited as one of America's Top Surgeons by the Consumers' Research Council of America since 2004. He has been included in Marquis Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare since 2004; Marquis Who's Who in Science and Engineering in 2006 and 2007, and in Marquis Who's Who in America in 2006. International recognition includes honorary membership in the Brazilian College of Surgeons and the Hellenic Society of Laparoscopic Surgery.
Dr. Pomp is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, an active member of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the New York Surgical Society, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the North American Association for the Study of Obesity, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, the leading laparoscopic surgery organization in the world.
Dr. Pomp was also active nationally in Canada as an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons, on committees for the Canadian Association of General Surgeons and the Quebec Association of Surgeons. During these years Dr Pomp taught hundreds of surgeons during many courses involving minimal invasive techniques.
